The Chorister At The Abbey
The Norbridge Chronicles Murder Mystery Book II
by Lis Howell
Readers of The Flower Arranger At All Saints (also
reviewed on this site) will have already been introduced to Suzy Spencer, single mother of two and sometime
sleuth. Now she is living with widower Robert Clark in his tidy house, reminders of his formidably organized late
wife Mary everywhere, and wondering if it is going to work. Then just before Christmas an unpopular shopkeeper is found
murdered in the music department of a local college. Was he really clutching a Psalter, and if he was where is it
now?
Anybody who likes a good plot-driven murder mystery with lots of interesting characters, local color and even
some satire on the vicissitudes of modern life need look no further. There isn’t enough of this sort of thing being
published - not quite cozy, but with an amateur sleuth and all the other items listed above. Suzy juggles her busy
job (about which we hear very little), children and love life with solving yet another crime and getting to know some
more local people. The story is not told solely from her point of view, as we have several other characters
including sad frumpy Alex and talented teenager Tom to eavesdrop on, and see things from their angle. It works well
done this way, as does the added dimension of the Norbridge Abbey Chorus and various facts about the Church of England
religion. This is not an inspirational novel however, and the concerns are more for aspects such as high versus low
church practices, psalms, and musical history. I am not making this sound interesting but it is, and all packed into
an enviably well-paced and busy book. Not quite Phil Rickman - although if you are keen on his work you will
probably also enjoy this, more akin to Caroline Graham’s series (the books, not the TV series I hasten to add). If
you like these, this is also going to appeal to you. |
