Lily (Lil) Diamond is raised in a loveless home by a cold-hearted mother and step-father. In her teens, (during the
60s) she takes up with Patrick Brodie who, over time, takes his place in the mobster realm, and Lil takes quickly to
the role as queen of London's gang land. Patrick is a man who smiles only in his home and cultivates fear on the
streets. Both live for their children. And sadly it's their children who witness their father's undoing.
Lil goes on with the man who violently murders her husband. But Lil raised her oldest, Pat, to follow in his
father's brutal footsteps. When he's old enough, Pat Jr. makes his mark with his mother's blessing. On the street,
the names and faces change, but the Brodie family holds fast with Lil at the helm. The odd part of this saga is how
the murder of her daughter brings Lil and a detective close.
Expect hardcore family history at its wickedest as Marina Cole breathes life into three generations of mobsters,
from the 60s to the 90s. The audio book, read by Nicola Duffett, is filled with never-ending hate, cruelty, and
violence. Profanity is a given in a novel such as this, but the "f" word exceeds expectations with its
constant—every other word—use in the narration and the dialogue. It interferes more than it enhances the
brutality of the storyline. Whew, what a listen. Expect some much needed breaks between listens. |
