Dead Even

by Brad Meltzer
Read by Scott Brick

Dead Even is one of Brad Meltzer’s earlier novels. We are introduced to Sara and Jared as Sara is having a nightmare about being murdered, something she hasn’t done since she met Jared. Jared is a defense lawyer with a big firm. Jared knows he’s good, but worries his place in the firm is on shaky ground since he’s yet to bring in his own clients. After job hunting for six months, Sara is about to start her new job as a district attorney. Just her luck, a messenger persuades her to take a folder holding a "winnable case" meant for one of the more popular assistant prosecutors. The winnable case sucks Sara into the life of the psychologically-insane man who lives to torment, maim and murder. She wants to give the case back, but her aide tells her it’s just not done. Pulled into Sara’s case as well, is husband Jared. After he is selected to defend Kozlow, Jared goes back to his firm to turn down the case. Kozlow has threatened Sara's life and now Jared is trapped in this insane case too. Soon, tormented witnesses renege and Jared is mentally writing his wife’s eulogy.  So, will there be more innocent deaths or will someone finally get dead even with the bad guys?

Meltzer is well-known for his psychological thrillers.  Revisiting his previous work is a great reminder of why—believable characters, subtle clues, intense scenes, and a desire to wish the bad guy the worst ending. And, of course, who better to narrate a Meltzer thriller than Scott Brick? Seeing a Meltzer title draws me to the store shelf; seeing Brick as the narrator has me moving all the quicker. Brick has a way of narrating suspense that keeps the listener alert. Great suspense; excellent narration. Expect to enjoy this one nonstop.
