Death of a Cad
Hamish Macbeth series #2
by M C Beaton
Hamish Macbeth is back for a second case in this welcome reprint of the much-loved series. This time he has a house
party to attend, even if the only person who wants him to be there is Priscilla Halburton-Smythe. The venue is Tommel
Castle, tacky mid 19th century fake castle, and home to Priscilla and her parents. The occasion is her engagement
to fashionable London playwright Henry Withering. Among the party guests is the obnoxious Captain Bartlett, a victim
if ever there was one. It is no surprise to readers when he is bagged on a grouse shoot - but whodunit?
Two books into the series, and two house parties already; it makes me wonder where the scriptwriters got their
ideas for the very different TV series! But house parties and murders go together like whiskey and soda, and there
are plenty of stereotypical, ghastly posh folk to be suspects and cause amusement to the reader. A linear story like
this needs to be short and sweet, and this one is a model of sharp satire and sharper pacing. I yearn to meet a few
more of the locals, and find out more about life in Lochdubh so I have to hope that more of this will be forthcoming.
If you like this type of old fashioned cozy, updated for the modern reader, book (although due to being twenty years
old this also has a period feel) you will enjoy this. |
