Defending Angels
A Beaufort & Company Mystery, No. 1

by Mary Stanton

Author Mary Stanton is well-known in  Fantasy circles for her Unicorns of Balinor series. With Defending Angels, she is destined to be just as popular in mystery circles. In an interview, Stanton mentions she took longer editing Defending Angels than she has any of other books. The mystery does seem to offer just what the reader needs to know about the characters, their surroundings, and their duties. Stanton gives some well-placed clues about the Company, who they are and what's expected of them. By the end of the mystery the reader knows exactly what attorney Brianna Winston Beaufort (Bree) has inherited, and it's quite fascinating.

Bree's uncle passed away. She's arrives in Savannah to renovate his office—damaged in a fire—and receive his clients. She finds an obscure little house surrounded by a murders' cemetery. It's creepy, but cheap. She just needs a spot to land until renovations are done. The landlord is friendly though slightly odd. In her new surroundings, Bree gains two employees and a dog. She also meets up with her old professor and her sister unexpectedly moves in. The strange part about this mystery is her first client. He's rich, powerful, intensely disliked, and dead.. The woman he haunts tells Bree he wants her to prove he was murdered and prove he wasn't as greedy in life as he was made out to be. It's a mystery full of supernatural strangeness.

Perfectly set in historical, spirit-filled Savannah, Georgia, Defending Angels is well-written and imaginative. I loved it. Stanton notes her angels benefit from the contributions of several Chinese religions, Mahayana Buddhism being one. The cosmology created for the Company is based on eleventh and twelfth century medieval theology.  And it all makes for a fascinating, entertaining read.
