An Evil Reflection
Jack Scott series, book 6
by John Paxton Sheriff
Jack Scott’s business sells hand painted toy soldiers for the collectors’ market, but when he is not up to his eyes
in Humbrol he is a private investigator. Together with his sidekick Calum Wick and sometimes Liverpudlian Stan Jones
he solves cases, and this one takes him up to the windswept Isle of Mull to discover whether Bridie Button’s fatal
truck drive was an accident or murder. This will reunite him with old flame Sian Laidlaw who is running an outward
bound course for executives on the island, who soon has an accident rather like Bridie’s...
A tortuous plot, escalating body count and bewildering twists and turns make this novel akin to a mountain pass
in the Highlands itself. This seems to be the sixth book in the series, something I did not know when choosing it
and it shows — don’t make my mistake or some of your pleasure (and understanding of the complex plot) will be
lost. Better to put this back on the shelf and go find A Confusion of Murders instead. For those up to
speed with the series, this is a fine addition and I certainly cannot fault it for a cracking plot. The Isle of
Mull seems to be rather devoid of local color, but then there is so much happening perhaps a tourist’s guide to the
island might have been rather superfluous. A good page turner that draws on what has gone before in the series,
rather as though nothing that happened has been forgotten. |
