A Few Good Murders
A Maggie Mars mystery #2
by Cady Kalian
Maggie Mars has moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a screenwriter. Her latest script, "Murder Becomes
Her," is being filmed at a Malibu Beach estate. The lead actress, Allegra Cort, is holding up production and
creating problems by throwing tantrums, objecting to portions of the script, and demanding changes. There ensues
an argument. When Maggie leaves Allegra's trailer she utters a fatal remark: "Hire another writer, but it will
be over my dead body or yours."
Sometime later, Allegra is found dead with her head bashed in with her own Oscar. Maggie's fingerprints are
found on the statue. That together with her words to Allegra make her a prime suspect.
Maggie's former boyfriend (lover), detective Joe Camanetti, is investigating the case. Complicating the
investigation is Rosie Perez, one of the deputies, who is Joe's former lover and will do everything in her power
to implicate Maggie. To attempt to clear herself, Maggie must delve into Allegra's past. She is assisted by a
reporter sent by Maggie's former editor at Vanity Fair to look into the case with her. There are plenty
of suspects since nobody liked or cared about the victim.
This is a light hearted, well plotted story. Maggie is a likeable heroine who is determined, resourceful,
and refuses to rely on anyone else to get out of the mess in which she finds herself. The story is well written
with clever, snappy dialogue. We are given an inside look at how Hollywood works and the out of control demands
of Hollywood stars. |
