Figure of Hate
Crowner John Series, Book 9
by Bernard Knight
Read by Paul Matthews
The Clipper Audio version of Figure of Hate begins with a historical note and mentions that the popularity of
tournaments can be compared to today's football. The exciting, but deadly tournaments are the focus of this mystery.
It's April, and there's a new sheriff in town as well as a jousting tournament. John is called away when the body of
a murder victim is found. A second murder occurs when Hugo Peverel is found dead on his estate. John suspects the
Frenchman that Hugo had a clash with at the tournament, but quickly learns Hugo was a figure to hate, leaving many
suspects. Fear not, John will find time to participate in the clanging of metal and pounding of hooves.
John's brother-in-law Richard de Reville is no longer the sheriff, but continues to be John's proverbal
thorn-in-the-side. Richard's destructive influence surges through the Peverel family, who seem to be more concerned
with appearances than with solving a murder. John also has to deal with his wife, Matilda, who is socially humiliated
and depressed that her brother is no longer the sheriff.
The audio version is read by Paul Matthews, whose narration paints a vivid picture of Bernard Knight's Exeter and
12th century culture. Knight's characters are realistic. The historical setting and dialogue are strong and consistent.
In listening, I became so caught up in the era and the characters that at the conclusion I felt I was a part of the
local audience at the Tavern waiting in anticipation for John to reveal all.
Great Listen. The unabridged edition takes time, but is well worth it. |
