Forensic entomologist Nick Polchak (the Bug Man) is an expert in using bugs to deduct the time and circumstance of
death. As a member of DMORT (Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team) he is used by FEMA to assist with the
casualties of Hurricane Katrina.
He locks horns with his superiors who demand the DMORT members make search and rescue their priority. He
discovers floating corpses with injuries pointing to death prior to Katrina. He suspects that someone is using the
disaster to conceal murder.
With the help of buddy Jerry Kibbe, a funeral home director from Fort Wayne, Indiana and a member of DMOT, and
JT Walker, a young man searching for his father amidst the chaos, he attempts to solve the deaths. His problems are
increased by Dr Beth Woodbridge, a psychiatrist who has to evaluate him, He would rather study bugs than
communicate with her, even though there is an attraction there.
This is a gripping, well written, action packed thriller which shows the utter devastation caused not only to
New Orleans but also to surrounding areas. The author weaves facts and figures into the narrative with intriguing
descriptions of details of bugs and graphic clinical examinations of bodies. The characters are well developed as
is the relationship between Nick and the young boy, Walker. The banter between Nick and Beth is stimulating.
This is well worth reading if for no other reason than to understand the extent of the tragedy resulting from
Katrina and of the methods of coping with the devastation.
