American passenger planes are being shot down by missiles. No radar could track the missiles and no terrorist
group claims responsibility for the horrendous attacks. The U.S. President, facing panicking airlines and public,
is determined to find the terrorists responsible. He calls Dr. Cameron "Cammy" Talbot to the White House. Her
previous invention, the Q-3, helped prevent an attack on India by Islamic militants (Checkmate, 2007 [also
reviewed on Myshelf.com]). Aware of her success with
anti-terrorist technology, the President asks Cammy to rush her development of an antimissile defense system.
Cammy meets with Dr. Wu, a friend at M.I.T. in Cambridge, to discuss her new design. Shortly thereafter, Dr.
Wu’s office is bombed, and Cammy barely escapes death. When several more attempts on her life follow, Cammy and
her former lover, Lt. Col. Hunt Daniels, are certain she’s become the target of a terrorist group bent on
preventing the development of her new antimissile system.
When China makes threatening moves toward Taiwan, that government pleads for the President’s help. That
assistance comes in the form of the Q-3 antimissile systems, which are to be transported by military plane to
Taiwan.
Hunt, assigned to fly the test plane which is to carry her new antimissile laser system, accompanies Cammy to
Travis Air Force Base. The plane carrying the shipment of Q-3 and her scientific team are to pick her up, then
fly to Taiwan. When a snag in her system develops, Cammy decides to remain behind, only to watch as the military
plane, her team and the shipments of Q-3 explode in the sky before her very eyes.
Gambit is a first-rate political thriller, guaranteed to make your heart pound and your thoughts race.
The scenario is all too plausible, making this fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat story terrifyingly authentic. Karna
Small Bodman’s years at the White House provide special insight into the world of politics. Cammy Talbot is also
pursued by her ex-lover, Lt. Col. Hunt Daniels, and the widowed vice president, Jayson Keller, making for an
additional dimension of suspense to this excellent and highly recommended read.
