God’s Spy
A Novel
by Juan Gomez-Jurado
Following the death of Pope John Paul II, the world’s mourners pack the streets of Vatican City, and one hundred
ten cardinals travel to Rome for the conclave. In the wake of the Pope’s death, Vatican and Italian police
departments discover the brutalized bodies of other holy men; their similar-tortured deaths predict a serial killer.
Italian police inspector Paola Dicanti and detective Maurizio Ponterio arrive on the grisly scene: a cardinal’s body
against an altar, his eyes gouged out, tongue removed, and both hands severed. Dicanti’s shock at learning about a
similar murder turns to outrage when the Vatican police confess they removed the body, and the scant evidence,
prior to the Italian police’s arrival. The Vatican insists the investigation remain unobtrusive to the arriving
media, mourners, and cardinals. FBI-trained profiler Dicanti leads the investigation to stop the twisted killer.
Dicanti’s team seems dangerously outmatched against a murderer, who not only stays two steps in front, but also
masterminds their next move. Newly appointed to the team, Father Fowler shares a shocking puzzle piece. He knows
the serial killer - a former priest with an apparent, new penchant for torturing cardinals and taunting police.
In God’s Spy, author Juan Gomez-Jurado creates an intense cat-and-mouse story complicated by the players’
internal secrets and agendas. I didn’t warm up to the main character at first; Dicanti’s intelligence is compromised
at the beginning by her flagging self-esteem and sexual feelings for co-workers. While some clues are unbelievable
and forced, God’s Spy is a compelling story with complex layers of conflict. Amid a backdrop of pedophilic
Catholic priests, the deadly maze spirals a city full of mourners, the impending arrival of the conclave, a
cardinal serial killer, uncooperative police departments, and an emergent romance into a suspenseful adventure that
will keep you reading late into the night. |
