Gone to Ground
A Will Grayson/Helen Walker novel, book # 1

by John Harvey

The body of gay academic Stephen Bryan is found bludgeoned to death in his shower. Detective Will Grayson and his partner Helen Walker are assigned to investigate this violent death. At first, focus is on Mark McKusick, Bryan's spurned lover. But further investigation shows a missing manuscript dealing with 1950s film star Stella Leonard's mysterious death. Leonard's great niece is now a star in British film and is involved in a remake of Leonard's famous film. Grayson wonders whether the professor’s digging into the past may have led to his murder. Their pursuit of the killer leads them to investigate events in the past and in the Leonard family, which may lead to further deaths.

This excellent police procedural is fast paced with an intricate plot. There are excerpts from a fictional screenplay which featured Leonard and which adds to the atmosphere. The characters are interesting and fully developed. The investigation by Grayson and Walker is thorough, bringing forth conflicting evidence before leading to the final confrontation.
