Heavenly Pleasures
Corinna Chapman Series #2
by Kerry Greenwood
As a big fan of Kerry Greenwood's historical mystery series featuring flapper Phryne Fisher, I was curious to see what
she'd make of a modern series. There are some similarities between the two - unconventional female leads with
unconventional lives, a certain breeziness in style, plenty of sensuality involving good food and gorgeous young men.
Like Phryne, Corinna has collected a mixed group of strays around her, from her recovering heroin addict apprentice,
Jason, to the Mouse Police who keep her stores organically rodent free in return for kitty dins. I can even see
Corinna and Phryne enjoying each other's company. But there are also some pronounced differences.
Phryne's unconventionality comes mostly from the things she does, Corinna's comes more from what she doesn't do.
She's given up power suits, power career and power marriage in return for living very comfortably with herself as a
non-dieting size XXL single woman in a thin obsessed world, running her bakery named Earthly Delights. Unlike Phryne,
Corinna is not an eager detective. That's reflected in this story being largely about Corinna's life, relationships
and observations on the world around her, rather than the sorts of enticing puzzles and driving plots behind so many
of Phryne's tales.
Corinna's new lover, Daniel, returns from trying to find a young girl carried off by a cult leader just in time
to help Corinna answer a plea for help from the owners of Heavenly Pleasures, a neighboring chocolate shop. Someone
is sabotaging their business through malicious tampering, so that people expecting an expensive bite of filled-chocolate
bliss instead get a mouth full of chili or soy sauce laden horrors. In return, Corinna becomes involved in helping
Daniel deal with the cult leader and missing girl, while also wondering what's going on with the mysterious and
invisible new neighbor who seems to be known by the police. Strangely enough it seems this may all be connected;
but if so, then how, and what will it cost them to sort it all out?
An enjoyable read, if a very different one from the author's better known historical series. Kerry Greenwood's
writing is always full of memorable characters and vivid descriptions. But basically you enjoy the story (or don't)
because you enjoy Corinna's company (or don't). Me, I'll happily be looking for another dose. |
