A Knife in the Back
Professor Sally Good series #2
by Bill Crider
Dr. Sally Good is head of the English department at Hughes Community College in Texas. Another faculty member,
Jack Neville, has asked Sally for a date and she has hesitantly accepted. But before any social activities have a
chance to begin, a tragedy strikes the small school. One of the College trustees is found murdered with a knife
sticking out of his back. The killing becomes problematic for Jack Neville because the murder weapon is a knife
that Jack personally fashioned in a knife-making class; it was his pride and joy. Jack immediately becomes the
prime suspect and the police don’t seem to be interested in looking any farther.
Sally Good can’t believe that Jack is guilty and sets out to prove his innocence. One of the problems that she
faces is that the murdered trustee had many enemies and they need to be sorted out. Sally uncovers a few juicy
tidbits about some of her colleagues along the way. As a helper in the investigation, Jack appears to be clueless
and resigned to the notion that he will be the one who stands trial for the killing.
Bill Crider is one of those authors I wish I’d discovered earlier. This book is fast reading, easy to follow,
punctuated by just the right amount of humor, and believable. The characters are great and easy to visualize and
the plot keeps you guessing right up to the end. If you’re looking for quality entertainment with a thrill thrown
in here and there, this book is for you. |
