Son of the former governor of Florida, Jack Swyteck's first job out of law school had been a four-year stint with
the Freedom Institute, a group of lawyers who work only on capital cases defending the guilty on Death Row. For
four years, Jack filed petitions for stays of execution to keep Theo Knight alive. Finally DNA tests proved Theo
innocent. They became best friends, with Theo as Jack's chief investigator. After Jack resigned from the Freedom
Institute (The Pardon) he
became a Federal district attorney, but finally left to become a criminal defense attorney in Miami, Florida.
Sally Fenning, a beautiful, depressed multimillioness, wants Tatum Knight, Theo's Knight's reformed contract
killer brother, to kill her. Tatum refuses, but when Sally is killed, he becomes "a person of interest." Theo
asks Jack to represent Tatum and to look into Sally's murder.
Sally's considerable estate is willed to six different people; only the last living will inherit the $46
million. All but Tatum were despised by Sally and were connected with the murder of Sally's daughter five years
earlier... her ex-husband, his divorce lawyer, the prosecutor who failed to bring charges against any suspect,
the newspaper reporter who wrote about the case, and a mystery man who can't be located. Soon, one by one, the
beneficiaries begin to die. Jack flies to Africa to see Sally's sister, Renee, a doctor working with the
Africans. He tries to learn why Sally was so determined to die and why she named those heirs. Jack and Renee
become attracted to each other. Jack must solve the deaths before there is no one left.
This is a smoothly written legal mystery filled with fast-paced action. It is a story of love and hate,
hope and fear, and revenge and friendship. The side trip to Africa is introduced to bring in a secondary
character who will be important to the case. The dialogue is witty. Jack is a likable protagonist, earnest,
intelligent, professional and driven by his curiosity. His friendship with Theo Knight, now his best friend, is
an appealing relationship.
This is an enjoyable read which holds the reader's attention throughout, and makes him want more.
