The Murder Notebook
a Nate Rodriguez mystery #2
by Jonathan Santlofer
NYPD sketch artist Nate Rodriguez has an uncanny ability to draw things he has never seen. He is reconstructing the
skull of a man burned beyond recognition, in the hopes of establishing his identity. When a man commits suicide by
jumping from the observation platform of the Empire State Building after killing an innocent bystander, Nate is
assigned to work with Detective Terri Russo to find the reasons behind the killing. There is another murder / suicide,
which the police are treating as an unconnected incident, but Rodriguez suspects a link between them. When there
are more similar occurrences and the investigators from an unnamed government agency intervene, his suspicions are
confirmed. Further probing on his part reveals a secret government experiment gone wrong.
In the meantime he has been haunted by his cop-father's murder years ago, believing it was his fault. With the
help of his Cuban abuela (grandmother), a devout Santerian, he is able to bring the face of his father's
killer into focus and learn the truth about his killing.
The Murder Notebook presents a chilling picture of what might happen with experiments on the human mind,
performed by scientists with government sanction and no restraints. The author has combined his artistic ability
with his talent as a writer to give the reader a sketch-by-sketch view of the progress of the investigation. The
interplay between Rodriguez and his lover, Terri, and between Rodriguez and his grandmother is insightful and human.
The plot is an intriguing one, guaranteed to keep the reader's curiosity until the shocking conclusion. |
