Night Kill
First in the Zoo Mystery series
by Ann Littlewood
A former zookeeper in the Oregon Zoo in Portland, Ann Littlewood has used her insider knowledge to create an
exciting new mystery series from Poisoned Pen Press. Night Kill follows feline keeper Iris Oakley as she
tries to solve who killed her estranged husband. An assortment of unusual characters pop up at her workplace,
including the zoo foreman Kevin Wallace with a heart of stone, biker Hap Ricketts who handles the animal food,
ex-boyfriend Denny Stellar who sees conspiracies everywhere, the cold, Spock-like zoo vet Dr. Dawson, and gossipy
secretary Jackie. When a series of accidents begin to happen, Iris is moved from area to area, and finally assigned
to birds as a junior keeper, a job she grinds her teeth about for a variety of reasons.
The mystery is great, and Iris Oakley is an undaunted heroine who usually gets into loads of trouble. And, of
course, the other characters are so unusual I'm hoping that the author will delve more into each of their lives in
forthcoming books. But the real draw in Night Kill, and something that I think will hold true for all of the
books Ann Littlewood will write in this series, is the behind the scenes look at how a zoo operates. In a couple of
hundred pages, not only did I get a great, page-turning mystery (with a ton of red herrings!) but I learned about
big cat behavior, how to feed penguins, and what not to feed bears. I also found out about the detailed records
zookeepers must maintain and the fact that not all zoos have the dollars necessary to keep on top of the latest
equipment, habitats, or behavioral techniques. I think I will learn a lot from future books.
If you love mysteries and you love zoos, Night Kill is a must-read! Well-done! |
