Nothing to Lose
Jack Reacher #12

by Lee Child

Jack Reacher, ex-military policeman, has decided to cross the United States from Calais, Maine diagonally to San Diego, California. He has no home and no family. He travels by bus, hitchhikes, and walks when a ride is not available. He has only the clothes on his back, his passport, an ATM card and a folding toothbrush.

When he reaches Colorado he is given a ride as far as Hope. There the road is divided between the towns of Hope and Despair. Intrigued by the name, he decides to go to Despair. Despair appears to be a reflection of its name. When he enters a bar for a refreshing drink he encounters hostility. Strangers aren't welcome. After a confrontation at the bar, Reacher is taken before the local judge and ordered out of the town. The police escort him to the town line and warn him never to return.

At the Hope town line sheriff Vaughan is sitting in her patrol car waiting for him. She informs him that this treatment is par for the course. Reacher is intrigued by the situation. He borrows Vaughan's cruiser and proceeds to scout the territory. He has many questions. Why do so many people vanish when they arrive at Despair? Why are there so many big trucks in and out of the town? Why is there a military guard post at the entrance to Despair when there is no military installation? The answers to these questions and many others keep Reacher in danger and keep the reader in a constant state of suspense between Hope and Despair.

The plot is compelling and suspenseful. You have to keep reading as you have no idea what is coming, and you have to know. As always Lee Child has given his readers a well written, action filled story. Reacher is indestructible and indomitable and we hope for more of him in the near future.
