Scots on the Rocks
a Bed and Breakfast mystery # 23
by Mary Daheim
Judith Flynn and her husband, Joe, decide they need to rid themselves of the stresses of their business. Judith
allows Joe to plan their vacation. They are to take her cousin, Renie, and Renie's husband, Bill. Judith has no
idea where they are going, and so is surprised and dismayed to land in the boondocks of Scotland.
The women are marooned in an ancient castle while the men go fishing with the local Scottish police inspector.
They plan to go shopping, explore the countryside, and enjoy Scotland. That is not to be, when an explosion rocks
the castle and leaves the dead body of Harry Gibbs, the grandson of the castle's caretakers, practically in front
of them.
Judith feels compelled to solve his murder. She finds many suspects as Harry had not endeared himself with the
villagers. The prime suspect is Harry's wife, Moira, an heiress. Harry is her second husband, the first having
died tragically, and various male friends also dying unexpectedly. Judith gets no help from the villagers; few are
friendly but most are not. Renie is not inclined to help solve the murder, and is concerned about the whereabouts
of the husbands who went fishing and haven't come back. There is much danger that threatens their lives.
Scots on the Rocks is a charming book with entertaining characters. Judith is a very smart, resourceful and
inquisitive woman with a likeable cousin. The local color and setting of the action is picturesque and beautiful.
A delightful book to pack in the suitcase to read on vacation.... |
