Shades of Blue
An Evan Horse novel #6

by Bill Moody

Jazz pianist Evan Horse has returned to California from a long stay in Europe.  He has reestablished himself in the local jazz scene, reunited with his FBI girlfriend,  Andie Lawrence, and is invited to record with a popular jazz group in New York.  His life is disrupted with the news of the death of his friend  and mentor, pianist Calvin Hughes, who has left everything to Evan.

When cleaning out the house he has inherited, Evan finds a note and photo of Hughes taped to the bottom of a drawer, and finds aging, handwritten sheet music which might have been the original composition of two famous Miles Davis recordings.  Evan questions whether Calvin had been the originator of the music rather than Davis.   He begins to track down the mysterious photo and attempts to determine the source of the music.

Jazz aficionados will especially enjoy this story with its frequent references to legendary jazz musicians and its references to jazz history.  The story is entertaining and holds the reader's interest. Evan's own musical career is intertwined with that of the legendary characters.
