The Shadow Walker
A Nergui mystery #1
by Michael Walters
When two mutilated bodies (severed heads, missing hands) are discovered in the streets of Mongolia's capital, Ulan
Baatar, the Minister of Justice draws Nergui from his promotion investigating state corruption back to his old job
as head of Serious Crimes. The State can not afford the publicity of a serial killer. Then a British subject is
brutally murdered in an exclusive hotel. In answer to a request for assistance, Drew McLeish of British CID is sent
to help with the investigation. A Mongolian policeman becomes the fourth victim. Nergui and Drew, with the
assistance of Nergui's successor and protege Doripalam, find their investigations lead to a tourist camp in the Gobi
Desert and a deserted factory where they find sudden, almost fatal, danger. The conclusion in the abandoned factory
is a thrilling one.
The Shadow Walker is not only a riveting mystery but also is a look into another culture. I found myself
as intrigued with the country, the Gobi Desert, and the customs of the people, with the contrast between the new and
the old Mongolia, as I was with trying to solve the mystery. The author very successfully evokes the sense of
place and people. The plot is well constructed. The pace of action is constant. The characters of Nergui and Drew
are fully developed, establishing a very human relationship between the two. They make an exciting team.
I would hope that we see more of Nergui in the future. His character is a refreshing change. |
