Silent Witness
A Sam Kincaid Mystery
by Michael Norman
It starts with a botched armored car robbery. Two people are dead and one of them is one of the perpetrators.
Detective Kate McConnell is put in charge of the investigation. She soon learns that the dead bandit was part of a
renegade branch of Warren Jeff’s Fundamentalist Church, itself a polygamist offshoot of the Mormon religion. The
leader of that group, Walter Bradshaw, is captured and awaiting a preliminary hearing. Two witnesses come forward.
Arnold Ginsberg tries to help police with the investigation and is murdered in downtown Salt Lake City. The other
witness, Robin Joiner, simply drops out of sight. With Bradshaw in custody, Sam Kincaid, Utah Corrections
Department Special investigator gets involved.
The key to the case might very well lie in the story that Robin Joiner, the missing witness could tell.
Something about Robin just doesn’t seem right. All Sam and Kate need to do is find her.
Kate and Sam are not only dealing with a complex grid of cult impregnability but Sam is faced with unreasonable
bureaucracy imposed by an overzealous supervisor. As if that isn’t enough, things are further complicated by Sam’s
ex-wife’s child custody challenge.
Author Michael Norman’s law enforcement background comes through loud and clear in this book. His grasp of
procedures and everyday police activities add reality to this story. I like his straight talking style; the
dialogue rings true. The timing couldn’t have been better for a hard hitting story about splinter groups of
polygamists. |
