Skate Crime
A Figure Skating Mystery, Book Four
by Alina Adams
Figure skating researcher Bex Levy lands her first producing assignment: covering the tribute show for the
renowned figure skater, Lucian Pryce. She jumps on the first available Colorado flight and tries not to think
about the anxiety-producing marriage proposal from her boyfriend, Craig Hunt. Instead of leaping into his arms
with joy, Bex stalled him. Since Craig is a widower with a teenage son, her biggest worry lingers. Does he want
a replacement wife and mother? Craig graciously offers her time and distance to think; he will tag along with
his son for The Figure Skating Hall of Fame's tribute to Pryce. They prepared for time apart until Bex's career
sent her flying to the same tribute. How will she concentrate on her big break, and her answer to Craig’s proposal,
if they’re both at the show?
Bex works the rink like a seasoned producer. At least, that's what she hopes the camera crew and skaters think.
Lucian Pryce agrees to exhibit his fifty-plus years of agility on ice. In a simple turn to greet his long time
friend, Lucian falls, hits his head and dies. Fans are shocked. Friends and family are saddened. Bex knows it was
murder. Who would kill the skating legend? In the course of her lone murder investigation, Bex uncovers a slew of
suspects. Gina bitterly confronts her lost skating career; Lucian slid her from star skater to his wife. Sabrina
barely hides the contempt for her dead dad; she blames his overbearing and egocentric career for killing her
mother, Lucian's first wife. Star students and gifted partners have shone and disappeared under Lucian's tutelage.
Bex wonders who didn't have a motive to kill Lucian, though police stand firm on claiming an accidental death. As
she weaves through her suspects' lives, Bex concludes two things: Lucian was murdered, and second marriages mirror
the lives of first wives.
Author Alina Adams expertly mingles career and personal conflicts in Skate Crime. Each chapter opens
with a different point of view, which gives readers insight into each character's feelings and possible motives.
Adams glides through these varying points of view with ease and maintains each character's voice. Her protagonist,
Bex, rings realistic as a determined 24-year old, brimming with humor, intellect and uncertainty. Readers may need
to keep track of all the displaced relationships, but these tangle into a delicious story of love and fame, on
and off the ice. Blurbs from skating message boards add an enjoyable aspect to the storyline. I look forward to
reading more stories from the talented Adams. Readers will enjoy unraveling the suspects and guessing the true
murderer in Skate Crime. |
