Storm Runners
by T. Jefferson Parker
Matt Stromsoe and Mike Tararez were best friends in school. But, afterwards, their paths went in different
directions. Matt became a detective in Orange County California, Mike became the leader of La Eme, the
brutal Mexican Mafia. When Mike's girlfriend is killed in a drug raid, he blames Matt and vows vengeance. He
plants a bomb in Matt's garage, but Matt's wife and son are killed by the bomb meant for him. Matt is partially
disabled and becomes a private investigator. Mike is sent to prison for life for the bombing, but manages to
control the Mafia empire from within the prison.
Matt is hired to protect Frankie Hatfield, a local TV weather forecaster, from a stalker. He discovers the
stalker is employed by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power which wants Frankie and her research, aimed
at developing a method to make rain, out of the picture. Matt becomes attracted to Frankie but complicating his
life is Mike's escape from prison. There is an inevitable, violent confrontation between the two.
The name T. Jefferson Parker is guaranteed to give his readers a suspenseful and unusual plot. This is no
exception. He offers insights into the Mexican Mafia and knowledge of gangs both in and out of prison. The
discussion of the science of rainmaking is most interesting, detailed and question raising. Can it really be done?
It would surely solve a lot of problems. The character development is excellent... Matt's final recovery from his
bereavement and physical damage, the adversarial contact between Matt and Mike. The action is nonstop with a
chilling conclusion.
A highly readable, engrossing thriller which is not to be missed. |
