Straits of Fortune
by Anthony Gagliano
Colonel Andrew Patterson, former Green Beret with years of military experience conducting scientific and top secret
experiments for the government has his own biotech pharmaceutical company, Pellucid Labs where he made his fortune.
He propositions his personal trainer, Jack Vaughan, an ex-NY cop, to sink the yacht in his back yard. The yacht
belongs to Matson, a pornographer. Patterson alleges that Matson was blackmailing him with a pornographic video
tape of his daughter, Vivian, and that Vivian has shot and killed him to protect her father. Matson's body is
aboard the yacht. Vaughan had an affair with Vivian who jilted him for Matson. The Colonel offers Vaughan $100,000
to sink the yacht.
Vaughan agrees only to protect Vivian, But he finds two dead bodies aboard the ship. He successfully sinks the
yacht, but when leaving the scene he is pursued by Randolph Williams, the Colonel's "man" who served with him in
Vietnam. Williams tries to shoot and drown Vaughan to cover the incident. Vaughan is picked up by the Coast Guard
and accused of trafficking in illegal immigrants. To add to his problems he learns that the Colonel's pharmaceutical
products have developed into 'designer drugs". It becomes a matter of life or death to elude Williams and to
extricate the Colonel and Vivian from their dilemma.
Straits of Fortune is a well written, action-packed story of betrayal. The atmosphere and landscapes of
Florida are vivid. The characters are well presented with snappy dialogue. The scene of Vaughan's attempt to
escape Williams's onslaught in the sea is breathtaking and thrilling. Vaughan is a tough individual who will survive
to fight another day. |
