Suspicious Minds
Book 2 in the Squeaky Clean mystery series
by Christy Barritt
I just discovered Gabby St. Claire, the undaunted owner of Trauma Care, a crime scene cleaning company. Author
Christy Barritt introduced her in
Hazardous Duty, the first book of the Squeaky Clean mystery series. I found Gabby in Suspicious
Minds, the second book in the series, taking on a job of mold remediation to supplement her income and
discovering a dead Elvis impersonator in a crawl space underneath a house. But one fake Elvis isn't the only dead
body she finds. Soon, Gabby is neck-deep in an unofficial investigation of two murder victims that is making her
cop boyfriend highly unhappy. Toss in an old boyfriend, a cute surfer dude wanting to horn in on her crime scene
cleaning territory, very unusual neighbors and death threats, and you've got a the makings for a delightful mystery
romp.
Because Christy Barritt is considered a Christian writer, I was curious to see how faith would be a factor in
these books. Ironically, Gabby St. Claire isn't a believer; she's struggling with her own faith or lack of it and
dealing with an alcoholic father. Discussions of faith do come up between characters but that isn't the focus of the
book and there isn't a big altar call at the end. Gabby does get some spiritual insights. Everything is tastefully
done.
I was totally enchanted by Gabby St. Claire and the cast of wacky characters around her. The mystery was
multi-layered and exciting, and the ending was very unexpected but very satisfying. I can't wait until the next
Squeaky Clean mystery is out. |
