The Tenth Justice

by Brad Meltzer
Read by Scott Brick

Ben Addison is a new clerk for Justice Hollis, a Supreme Court Justice. He connects mentally with fellow clerk Lisa. Ben also connects with a former fellow clerk named Rick. Rick shares stories with Ben about the Supreme Court and Justice Hollis. Ben reveals more than he should about a court decision and later discovers former clerk Rick isn’t a real person. Ben quickly learns Rick is able to open a mailbox, set a dinner reservation, send mail to his parents, and watch every move he makes. Ben confides in his roommates and Lisa. One roommate works for a newspaper and reveals too much, which leads to an investigation. Meanwhile, they all go in search of Rick, which leads to failed set-ups and unexpected appearances. The deeper the hunt, the more suspicious Ben becomes—of everyone.

What Ben believed was the Yellow Brick Road to a big career leads to investigation, black-mail, paranoia and financial temptation. With the conspiracy theory conversation and suspenseful scenes, Metzer offers an insider’s view of the Supreme Court Clerk’s inner sanctum and the process of writing opinions.

Hachette’s audio version is read by veteran reader Scott Brick. Brick is gifted in the delivering of a suspicious / desperate character. Meltzer’s dialogue and Brick’s reading will have you as suspicious of every character as Ben. If you like legal suspense, this is just one of Meltzer’s novels I recommend.  Great Listen. Pass it on.
