Undertow

by Sydney Bauer

The innocent celebration of Teesha's 18th birthday turns to tragedy when the boat she and her three companions are on capsizes.  Her mother, Rayna Martin, races to their rescue, but has to leave behind one of the girls, Christina Haynes.  Upon returning to pick up Christina, they find her drowned.

Christina happens to be the daughter of Rudolph Haynes, a powerful U S Senator, who blames Rayna for the death of his daughter, claiming she intentionally neglected to rescue his daughter (white) while rescuing the rest of the girls (black).  Through his influence, Rayna is charged with  murder.

It is the hope of Boston attorney David Cavanaugh with the help of Rayna's coworker, Sara Davis, that they might find something in the Senator's past, or that of his wife, which would explain this vendetta.  Their pursuit  brings them against a deadly and ruthless enemy.

Undertow is an excellently plotted and well written story.  The action is fast-paced and compelling.  This is a veritable page turner.  There is interesting courtroom drama with the climax a startling one.  The problem of racism is dealt with.

Well recommended as an entertaining, fast read.
