We Shall Not Sleep
World War I series # 5
by Anne Perry
Toward the end of the war the three Reavleys: Judith, the ambulance driver, Joseph, the Army chaplain, and
Matthew, the British Intellignce officer, find themselves together in the mud, blood and filth of the trenches
of France.
They are close to finding the identity of the "Peacemaker". The Peacemaker's mission had been to undermine
the British war effort and bring Germany and England together. The Reavleys have been searching for him since
he killed their parents at the beginning of the war. Matthew has found a German officer who is willing to go to
England and reveal to authorities the identity and mission of the Peacemaker. Before this happens, a young nurse
is viciously murdered. Matthew is charged with the crime. Joseph and Judith must find the killer to prove his
innocence.
This is the final chapter of the World War I saga of the Reavleys. They come to realize the life they return
to will never be the same as it was. The descriptions of the conditions in the trenches are graphic and
horrifying. The discussion of what war has cost the soldiers and their families is as relevant today as it was
then. This is a powerful finish to what has been an excellent series depicting the lives of a family during
World War I.
