Ten years ago Charles MacKenzie Jr.(Mack), a Columbia University senior, walked out of his apartment and disappeared.
Mack had everything to live for. He was just about to graduate from Columbia and was already accepted at Duke
University Law School. Every year on Mothers Day he telephones his mother to tell her he is alive.
Now his sister, Carolyn, has graduated from law school and has served as a clerk for a civil court judge. Tired
of having her mother torn apart by these calls, Carolyn determines to find what happened. So this year when Mack
calls, Carolyn interrupts the conversation to tell him that she is going to track him down The next day her uncle,
Monsignor Devon Mackenzie, is given a message found in the collection basket, apparently from Mack telling Carolyn
not to look for him This only makes Carolyn more determined than ever to find the reason behind his disappearance.
Both her mother and her honorary uncle, Elliott Wallace, who controls their finances, disapprove. Her search
takes her to the superintendent of Mack's apartment building and to his former roommates and girl friend. She is
unexpectedly attracted to his former roommate, Nick De Marco, now a club owner. With his help she finds herself
involved in murder and deceit and betrayal before she can find the truth.
As usual Mary Higgins Clark has plunged her readers into a thriller about a young woman who will stop at nothing
to unravel the mystery surrounding her family. The plot is well written with intriguing aspects. The characters
are all well developed with elements of romance, deceit and betrayal. There are many red herrings to confuse the
issue.
An easy, quick read suitable for an afternoon's relaxation.
