Above the Law
A Casey Jordan novel #2

by Tim Green

U.S. Senator Chase sets out to hunt wild turkeys on his ranch outside Dallas, He takes with him Elijandro Torres, an illegal immigrant who is to set up the decoys. But instead of shooting the big tom turkey, Chase kills Elijandro, whom he believes has been messing with Chase's wife. Chase is a well loved Senator and at a press conference with copious crocodile tears he recounts the tragedy of "the hunting accident."

Elijandro's widow, Isadora, doesn't believe this is an accident. She is persuaded by her sister to seek aid from Casey Jordan at the Legal Aid Clinic. Isadora is going to be deported and her baby, Paquito, has been taken away from her and placed in a foster home.

Casey Jordan once had a high powered practice in Dallas, but now operates the Marcia Sales Legal Clinic for women, with two associates and Jose O'Brien—former homicide detective turned private investigator—out of an abandoned Sunoco filling station. Her purpose is to provide legal aid to the impoverished immigrant workers in the area.

She takes on Isadora's case and soon finds herself fighting against the powerful senator and the corrupt sheriff, Chief Gage. She finds Isadora after she has been kidnapped by Chief Gage's men and loaded into a truck trailer with Mexican immigrants being transported to a Mexican pharmaceutical facility, for use as human guinea pigs.

Even with the evidence she has, she is frustrated by the powerful forces behind Chase. It seems the law is unlikely to prosecute him. But there is justice coming to him in the form of vengeance.

Above the Law is a fast-paced, suspenseful story which captures the reader's attention from the opening chapter and retains it to the end. It is a well written story about the abuse of power (Senator Chase) and pure unadulterated evil (Chief Gage). It gives a picture of the plight of illegal as well as legal immigrants who fall under the control of people of bad character.

Thoroughly recommended.
