A Darker Domain

by Val McDermid

Detective Inspector Karen Pirie is the head of the Fife, Scotland Cold Case Squad.

In the space of a few days she is handed two cases, both going back to the mid 1980’s. In an effort to leave her mark Pirie takes on both cases.

The first case arrives as a young woman comes to report her father missing.  It would not seem a case for the Cold Squad until she admits he has not been seen or heard from since 1984.

The young woman’s father, Mick Prentice, was involved in the national miners strike at that time and his family and friends believe he joined the strikebreakers. This makes him a Blackleg Scab and dead in the hearts of his friends and family. So why did his family wait so many years to report him missing?

The second case is one that had quite a bit of coverage when it originally occurred. Heiress Catriona Maclennan Grant and her infant son were kidnapped in 1985. The ransom payoff was botched, the mother left dead and the infant son never recovered.

Now a journalist has uncovered some information that may indicate that the child is still alive and missing. As Pirie tries to unravel both cold cases, the psychological drama, old secrets, and betrayals slowly add up.

Another hit for the Queen of the Scottish Mystery Drama.
