Death of a Nag
Hamish Macbeth - Book XI

by M C Beaton

Fed up after certain recent events, Hamish decides to take a vacation. His destination is the coastal village of Skag, which looks as idyllic and delightful as its Cornish equivalent. But The Friendly House Bed and Breakfast is not well named, being cheap but not cheerful. The food is terrible, but the other residents aren’t too bad apart from Bob Harris, who nags his downtrodden wife Doris unmercifully when he isn’t insulting everybody else. On a boat trip around the bay conversation turns to Mr. Harris, and everybody starts talking about how much they would like to kill him...

Taking a break from Lochdubh, Blair and the frigid Priscilla, this is one of the strongest entries in the series in my opinion. Ms Beaton has a wonderful sense of place with the attractive but desolate Skag with its eerie singing sands, dreary digs and bored tourists. Here too is a plot that keeps the reader guessing and something new happening on nearly every page, making its modest length seem like a much longer novel. Some wordier authors would do well to read it and see what can happen with smart pacing, enough story and some interesting characters! Even the "nag" of the title turns out to be male, and while there may be some other stereotypes in here, often things are not quite what they seem. Overall, despite the fact I guessed early on who had done it I was left with a strong feeling of having read a very good whodunit.
