Fatal February

by Barbara Levenson

New mystery novelist Barbara Levenson is no novice to crime. A judge and former prosecutor and criminal defense attorney, Levenson has seen every aspect of the legal system. That is why her debut novel Fatal February rings so true. In this fast-paced book, readers follow attorney Mary Macgruder Katz, who finds herself adrift from the high-profile legal firm she has been working for and from a five-year relationship that hasn't led to the altar. Katz branches out into her own criminal defense practice and takes on the case of a wealthy society matron who is accused of murdering her philandering husband. That in itself would be enough for a great cozy, but Katz's predicament is complicated by a lawsuit from her ex and an ethics complaint Katz thinks also came from her former fiancé. She not only finds her livelihood and reputation in peril, but also her property and personal safety as vicious vandalism occurs at her home and her office. Helping to leaven all of this turmoil are the romantic intentions of hunky Latin real estate developer Carlos Martin, who propels her into his extended Cuban / Argentinean family while he struggles amid her Jewish / Southern Baptist relatives.

Fatal February is a deliciously exciting read on many levels. The mystery is satisfying and Katz's personal life has enough complexity and juicy romance for anyone. Barbara Levenson has created some very interesting characters who should be given more opportunities for readers to experience and see how they untangle other legal conundrums. Well done!
