The Juror

by George Dawes Green
Read by Lolita Davidovich, Jon Heard

The audio starts with Annie on the stand during jury selection. Her lack of news savvy and the humor in her young son’s knowledge about about "the Big SpaghettiO" win her a spot on the jury. The defendant is a mobster accused of killing The Man and his grandson. The length he went to, to make his killing is amazing. Annie is a sculptress and single mother. She comes across as naïve, which is a little odd since their area is known for mobsters and hits. The suspense starts when her friends and loved ones are threatened. All she has to do is vote Not Guilty. The Teacher is handsome, rich and charismatic. He’s also the guy making the threats. He takes pleasure in every lesson he gives. He’s also taken a shine to Annie and her fearless ways.  The two emotionally tango and you can’t help but wonder if she’s going to be the next mafia bride. Annie is scared, but tough, and willing to travel to the ends of the earth to protect her son. The Teacher’s killing ways recognize no boundaries when it comes to showing Annie who’s in charge. Readers can expect more than enough twists and turns, minds games—not to mention a startling conclusion.

The Juror was first published in 1995 by Warner now known as Hachette. I don’t know how I missed it the first time around, but after spending the day on a suspenseful ride with Annie, Oliver, and the Teacher, I’m sure glad this audio crossed my path.  Both Lolita Davidovich and Jon Heard narrated the audio version. Jon does a menacing, charismatic Teacher. And Lolita reads Annie as gentle, yet protective. Having two readers, especially when the lead characters are male and female, enhances the listen. Add Hachette’s sound effects and the performance is complete. Highly recommended.
