Famous Broadway actress Natalie Raines is found shot to death in her home in Cloister, New
Jersey. The obvious suspect is her husband, theatrical agent Gregg Aldrich. Natalie was about
to divorce him. Gregg had been stalking her trying to determine whether she was seeing another
man. He was considered "a person of interest" but no charges were filed against him.
Two years later, Jimmy Easton, an ex-con, comes forward claiming that Aldrich had tried to
hire him to kill Natalie. Bergen County prosecutor Emily Wallace files charges of murder against
Aldrich based on Easton's evidence and that of a neighbor who claims to have seen Aldrich entering
the garage on the night of the murder. As the trial progresses, Emily begins to doubt Aldrich's
guilt. Her recent heart transplant seems to give her extra sensibility regarding Natalie and her
past.
Emily doesn't realize that her friendly, helpful neighbor, Zachary Lanning, who offers to care
for her dog is really a serial killer who is stalking Emily and invading her home with the intention
of killing her.
In addition to a suspenseful mystery Clark has explored the field of heart transplants. There
are questions whether certain memories from the original donor are brought along with the transplanted
heart. This is an intriguing premise. As usual with a Mary Higgins Clark novel this is a fast
moving, quick read.
