The Likeness
Featuring Detective Cassie Maddox
Sequel to In the Woods

by Tana French

In Tana French's previous book, In the Woods (also reviewed on Myshelf.com), Detective Cassie Maddox helped investigate the murder of a twelve-year old girl in Knocknaree, Ireland.

The Likeness, French's newest book, takes place six months after that investigation, and Cassie is still dealing with the its grueling aftermath.

Cassie has transferred from the murder squad and continues the relationship she started with Sam O'Neil in the previous book.  When Sam calls her to the scene of his newest case, Cassie is stunned to see that the victim, a young college student, could pass as her twin. What is more, the girl was going by the name "Lexie Madison," an identity that Cassie had used several times before in undercover work.

While the investigators try to discover who the young girl really was and why she has been murdered, Cassie is asked to go undercover. The police will cover up the girl's death, saying she was only injured, and allow Cassie to take her place.

Cassie loves being involved in a murder case again but finds herself being drawn into the victim's life, becoming too emotionally involved, placing herself at great risk.

I truly enjoyed Tana French's previous book, In the Woods, and this book allowed me to be drawn once more into the life of Detective Cassie Maddox with all the good and, indeed, the bad. I hope Tana French continues to write using these characters.
