Milagro Lane

by Jay Brandon

Milagro Lane centers around the city of San Antonio.  Readers are introduced to Gabe Grohman and his family at the height of a family tragedy.  During the family tragedy, in walks Estela Valenzuela, a mysterious woman with an interesting past with Grohman’s family. Gabe and his family are curious as to why Estela is there, and how she knows the family. Gabe is introduced to more unique places of San Antonio through his getting to know Estela.  Will Gabe find the secrets of Estela’s mysterious relationship with his family?

Jay Brandon helps the reader explore San Antonio. But even though a cover blurb and the publisher's description emphasize that fact, this reader felt that the story could have taken place almost anywhere. The setting should have been more defined for people who are unfamiliar with San Antonio.

The characterization of Gabe, his family, and Estela is fantastic. Readers feel that they can connect with these characters, and wonder just as much as Gabe does who this Estela woman is. The mystery of who Estela is and where Gabe goes is revealed in a subtle and convincing way.  It’s a gradual progression and should not shock readers.
