Ravens begins with two shady characters from Ohio. On a road trip from Ohio to Florida
Romeo hits an animal in Georgia. He stops to try and save it, but he can’t find it. Shaw considers
it a sign of good luck; Romeo, not so much. At a truck stop in Georgia, Shaw hears about a
multi-million-dollar lottery winning. Resenting someone else’s good fortune, he forms a twisted
plan.
The Boatwright family is trying to keep their winning ticket a secret, which isn’t easy in
Brunswick, Georgia. Shaw ends up living with Mitch and Patsy, making threats, wanting what they
have. Tara, the daughter, is used as a pawn by Shaw while Romeo takes interest in Tara’s best friend.
Grandmother Nell is a gambler and colorful storyteller. The kind-hearted local deputy is infatuated
with Nell.
For crazy, charismatic Shaw it's a delusional game of greed and control. For Romeo it’s a hesitant
ride, despite all the terrible things they’ve done in the past. For the family it’s a never-ending
nightmare. For the listeners it’s an entertaining story with unforgettable characters.
Green includes quite a few eclectic, oddball characters with everyday labels—Christians
(moderates / extremists), blue-collar workers, criminals, and the downright poor. The story moves
from one character view to another. Each view is easy to follow, thanks to the various accents
provided by the author and the enhanced voices of the audio readers. The storyline is surrounded
by flashbacks—dark, eccentric or humorous revelations about each character. The story is
more of a fiction novel than a mystery. It’s humor and suspense, played out by colorful characters
with extreme southern accents which are perfectly portrayed in the audio version.
