Run for Your Life
Detective Michael Bennett series, No. 2
by James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge
Read by Dallas Roberts, Bobby Cannavale
Run for Your Life is the second in the Detective Michael Bennett series, the first being Step on a
Crack (reviewed for this site). Mike
is with the NYPD. The story begins with a hostage situation and switches to serial killings by an angry man fed
up with rude New Yorkers. The title is accurate in that Run for Your Life is exactly what the New Yorkers
do with each public killing. The murders seem random—or are they? Mike has to figure this out as he follows
the clues in each murder scene. It seems like the killings will never stop, until Mike makes some discoveries. The
murderer keeps in touch with his own actions via his Treo phone. Mike finds he and the killer have a mutual
contact and it leads to his own deadly scene with the killer. The authors offer enough twists and turns to keep
the story moving and Patterson's signature show down makes it all worthwhile. The question is: who will the
casualties be this time?
As in the last novel, the story moves back and forth from Mike's work to his personal life. In this one, Mike
goes home to his 10 adopted children, ill with the stomach flu (it's not pretty and runs throughout the storyline).
Luckily he gets daily help... Mike is also contemplating a job change...
The audio version is as active as the last. Sound effects bring the
story to life. I jumped at every gun shot. The readings are spot-on.
It's a quick, entertaining listen. Pass it on.
