Mad Dog Maddox simply wanted to see the ceremony the Yaqui Indian tribe was celebrating in Arizona. So, he
and Hailey, his mixed breed wolf, made a rush trip from Buffalo Springs, Kansas, to Tucson. They arrived just
before the ceremony began. Mad Dog gave Hailey a huge bowl of water, which she promptly emptied. Then, she
vanished into the night. Mad Dog wasn't worried, though. Hailey often did this, and she was capable of more
than he wanted to imagine. He only knew she would be at his side the moment he needed her.
Mad Dog walked on to the ceremony, leaving his car where it was. At the gate of the Yaqui reservation, he
was accosted by a man who appeared to be an elderly Yaqui shaman. The old man objected to Mad Dog's presence
there, even stole Mad Dog's medicine pouch. An Indian guard, a Sewa, hired by the Yaqui to keep out the
spectators who would disrespect the Yaqui religious beliefs, stepped up. When Mad Dog tried to retrieve his
pouch, the shaman knifed the guard, killing him. Since Mad Dog looked white, he ran.
