Therapy

by Sebastian Fitzek
Translated by Sally Ann Spencer

Viktor Larenz's daughter Josy suffers from an inexplicable illness. When he takes her to a doctor, she disappears behind the office door and is never seen again.  Viktor and the police investigation are unsuccessful in finding her. Viktor is devastated by her disappearance. His marriage collapses.  He suspects that what may have happened to Josy may be connected to his past.

After four years, he retreats to a remote North Sea island, where he receives a visit from a beautiful visitor named Anna Glass, a writer who is asking him to treat her.  She suffers from a form of schizophrenia in which the characters she creates become real.  In her treatments, she envisions a girl who vanishes without a trace.  Viktor sees Josy in these visions and begins to wonder whether Anna is connected to Josy's disappearance or whether his past is behind this and he will ultimately suffer from the same forces that doomed Josy.

Therapy is a complex psychological thriller that held this reader's interest from the opening scene to the final outcome.   The characters are developed with depth and understanding. There are many twists to the plot, which hold the reader in suspense, guessing at the final outcome.   Who is Anna?
