Tree Huggers
by Judy Nichols
It's tough being newly divorced and the mother of a second grader while trying to re-enter the workplace. That
is the situation in which Kate Dennison finds herself in the opening pages of Tree Huggers by Judy
Nichols. Kate takes on the challenge of being a reporter for a small town weekly. She thinks she'll be covering
county commission meetings and school pageants, but instead finds herself smack dab in the middle of a double
murder trial, the result of an arson reportedly set by a militant environmentalist group called The Forces of
Nature. When Kate puts a human face to the young man accused of the crime and speculates on his innocence, her
life turns upside down. Dodging death threats and fire bombs, Kate also has to deal with the complications from
the return of an ex-boyfriend and a nit-picky ex-husband who is trying to take custody of her child. Kate is
determined to find the truth even if she has to anger the local hanging judge to do it.
This fast-paced cozy mystery is a true page turner! The characters are well crafted and the suspense is
appropriately nail-biting. Judy Nichols uses a clever device to preface each chapter. She prints an excerpt from
Kate's newspaper, the Winslow Beach Beacon, that has some bearing on the chapter. These are sometimes
advice columns, sometimes hard news, sometimes household or parenting tips. It's a very unique foreshadowing
technique. I found those to be very entertaining.
Tree Huggers is Judy Nichols' second novel. Her first,
Caviar Dreams, came out
in 2005, and she is currently working on a sequel to that book, entitled How Do You Get to Music Hall? |
