Trust Me

by Peter Leonard

Two characters, Lloyd and Bobby, invade the home of a man, Lou Starr, who had won money at the casino. They didn't expect to be propositioned by his lover, Karen. She convinces them to help her recover $300,000 she had entrusted to her former lover, Samir. When they broke up, Samir refused to return the money. Now she wants it back. Samir is a bookmaker who wants to collect from Bobby whose debts are overdue. One of his crew is O'Clair, an ex-cop, his collector. He is on Bobby's trail.

The two agree to Karen's proposal and attempt to retrieve her money and of course any more Samir may have in the safe. The elaborate scheme misfires and Karen flees with her money and some of Samir's also. But she is pursued by her so-called partners and by Samir's collector, in addition to a couple of Arab hit men who want the money for a stake in their future. There follows mayhem and much double-dealing.

Trust Me starts fast and never lets up. The plot is elaborate and full of twists and turns. It is also full of double and triple crosses, enough to keep the reader alert. It has many quirky characters, from eager debt collectors and grasping relatives to Arab hit men. Some situations are hilarious (two men trying to move a safe weighing a ton) and others deadly. The action moves through the suburbs of Detroit and Chicago, bringing a sense of place to the action.
