When the body of a woman is discovered near the quarry by two youngsters, Max Trentham
has a feeling of deja vu. The naked body was wrapped in a sheet as a shroud. Her throat
was slashed and a red ribbon with the victim's wedding ring was tied around her waist.
Five years ago four women had been killed in the same manner. At the time Jill
Kennedy's profile of the murderer pointed to Edward Marshall. In his flight from the
police chase, Marshall's car plunged over a cliff. His body was never recovered.
Now Max wonders whether Marshall had survived and was resuming his murder spree.
Or is this a copy cat at work? Videos made by Marshall of his murders surface. Now
Trentham must try to trace their possessor. He has a number of possibilities: Vince,
the husband of Carol Blakely, the murdered woman; Kinley Roberts, Jill's handsome
neighbor; or Marshall. Investigation takes Max and Jill into the pasts of these
suspects' lives. When another murder occurs they must intensify their probing to prevent
any further tragedies.
This is an engaging psychological thriller combining excellent police procedures with
intense analysis on the part of the forensic psychologist. The relationship between Max
and Jill has regained its previous closeness. The characters are realistic and sympathetic.
The atmosphere of suspense is effectively maintained throughout, with a surprising solution.
