Wicked Prey
Lucas Davenport Series, No. 19

by John Sandford

The city of St Paul Minnesota is the site of the Republican Party National convention. To the dismay of Lucas Davenport, his 14 year old adopted daughter, Letty, is roaming the streets interviewing as an unpaid intern for Channel Three TV. Lucas and the police are on the lookout for a dangerous ex-con who is looking to make a big haul with the Republican money men, robbing them of their attaché cases full of seeding money.

But Lucas has other problems...personal in nature. A psychopath, Randy Whitcomb, is targeting Davenport. Whitcomb, a pimp, had been struck by a stray bullet a while back during a police arrest. The bullet left him paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. He blames Davenport for his condition and vows vengeance. He is targeting Letty, feeling this would be more of a blow to Davenport than anything else he might do.

Wicked Prey is a well-written, fast-moving police thriller. The story is told not just from the police side but also from the villain's side. The characters are well developed. The dialogue is crisp. The frantic atmosphere of the Convention is vividly portrayed. The machinations of the politicians are eye opening and dismaying. The suspense is constant with a surprising and thrilling climax.

Strongly recommended.
