Big Jack is a partial reprint from original title Remember When [2003] by Nora Roberts
and J.D. Robb. Part one, titled "Hot Rocks," by Nora Roberts, is not included in this
audio—and actually doesn’t affect Big Jack as a stand alone mystery.
Samantha is a writer, just happy to be home after a national book tour. A book tour she owes
to her grandparents’ love story and involvement in a diamond heist. What she hoped would be a
quiet homecoming turns into robbery and murder. Sam’s friend/house-sitter Andrea is murdered and
the contents of her house torn apart. Lt Eve Dallas is called to the scene and discovers diamonds
missing since 2003 that could be a possible motive. If it is, Sam may be a living treasure map.
Eve and her team take the case in different directions. They hunt down those associated with the
older case and follow the odd false lead. During this case, Eve also deals with changes on her job.
The author pens a complex, futuristic mystery and fills it with characters strong on
chemistry—Dallas and rich, Irish husband Roarke, especially. Robb’s humor doesn’t stop at
the love scenes. Eve’s assistant Peabody has some changes Eve is working to accept. There are
futuristic things mentioned, such as phone link instead of cell phone, animated billboards, auto-chef,
as well as mention of futuristic police equipment and procedures, New York life, etc.; none come
across as complicated or over-explained. Seeing Robb’s version of the electronic age is
interesting.
Susan Ericksen’s narration is outstanding. She is the voice of Eve. A great listen. Highly
recommended. Share it with others.
