Cat Playing Cupid
A Joe Grey Mystery, No. 14

by Shirley Rousseau Murphy

He’s intelligent, crafty and a master detective. He’s also a gorgeous hunk, even if he is a cat. Joe Grey can speak English as well as any human. He has a perfect world with his owner, Clyde. Unfortunately, his perfect world has recently been turned upside down. A woman has invaded his territory, and she owns a dog! Now, Ryan Flannery and Clyde are on their honeymoon and Ryan has had to learn his secret.

Not all people will tolerate a cat that can talk. Superstitious people would consider such a cat a witch and try to kill it. Fortunately, Ryan keeps her mouth shut.

The only advantage to having Clyde gone is that Joe Grey can investigate mysteries without having Clyde bawl him out for sticking his nose into police business. Which meant that Police Chief Max Harper was the last person Joe wanted to know his secret.

Joe and the other two speaking cats that live in town, Dulcie and Kit, are anonymous informants to the police who want to remain anonymous. The three of them get into trouble when the clowder of speaking cats who live at the old ruins finds a dead body and a book; a book that must be kept hidden as it tells stories of speaking cats. In addition, Dallas Garza is working a cold case, a missing persons case, and Joe feels Garza needs his undivided attention.

Cat Playing Cupid deals a lot with the romance between Ryan and Clyde as well as the danger to the speaking cats. But there are two mysteries to be solved. Are they related? That is the question. Joe is at his best in this one, especially when he is catnapped. At least, he can phone home. I’d like to have a speaking cat... I think.
