Dead to Rights
Brady series, book 4

by J.A.Jance

Book two for me and I am still enjoying the way that J.A.Jance tells her tale!

I read these books a bit out of order, but that did not affect the story itself.  Since I already knew the cast of characters, it made it pretty easy to follow.  In this book, Sheriff Joanna Brady has just gotten elected to be the new Cochise County Sheriff.  She decided to run after her husband Andy was murdered in the line of duty. Life for Sheriff Brady goes from quiet to hectic the day they announce that she has won.  Her 9 year old daughter Jenny is having a very hard time sharing her mom with the town.  The death of a parent is hard to deal with no matter how old you are. For Jenny, the trauma of having her world turned upside down is compounded with having to share her mother with everyone else who needs her.

The signature opening of the book is consistent with the other one that I read.  Hal Morgan and his wife Bonnie are celebrating their 19th wedding anniversary and decide to book a room in the honeymoon suite of a Hyatt in downtown Phoenix for the night.  On the way back to the hotel from the movies, while crossing the street in the crosswalk, Bonnie is hit by a truck going the wrong way.  Turns out that truck was driven by Dr Amos Buckwalter, Bisbee's only town veterinarian.  Remember those names, as both will be reappearing later in the book.

Joanna juggles her daily life like a pro, dealing with both her personal responsibilities and the town that needs so much of her time.  While at times it seems she might be making huge mistakes, she thinks about her actions and then proceeds in the way that makes the most sense to her.

I would recommend that you pick up all of the Brady books by J.A. Jance, sit back and enjoy a truly great suspense series.
