Hamish Macbeth has returned to his village of Lochdubh from a vacation in Spain to find
the village in turmoil. The women of the village are very upset about the newcomer named
Catriona Beldame, who seems to have bewitched their men. The men are visiting her for an
herbal tea that is supposed to enhance their sex life. The village calls her a witch.
Hamish is enraged by her duplicity and carelessly says he will kill her for upsetting the
village.
When Catriona is found murdered and then her house is set on fire Hamish, because of his
foolhardy statement, is initially suspected. The authorities send in a forensic specialist,
Lesley Daton, to investigate. There are three more murders which lead Hamish to believe they
are all related to Catriona. He must clear his name while fending off the attentions of
Lesley who has set her sights on Hamish as her future husband.
Another engaging story about our Highland detective, Hamish Macbeth,
who solves his village's troubles while his own life is complicated
by his established girlfriends, Elspeth Grant and Pricilla Halburton-Smythe.
Will he always be married to his mongrel Lugs and domesticated cat
Sorsie? We are treated to the full flavor of the Scottish language
and a visit to the Highlands while he figures it all out.
